This is a story about my Dad, Bruce Dodson. He never would talk much about his time during World War II. Now that he and my Mom have passed, and being their only child, I have had the opportunity to go through all of their mementos. In doing so, I discovered a pile of letters that Dad wrote to his sister during his time in the service. Those letters, coupled with a search of WWII history are the focus of this blog.

Still in the Desert, But Less Men in the Tent
Post Marked October 26, 1943. (Had problems with my scanner, so I am a day late.) Not sure why Geraldine wanted Dad's ring size, but he enclosed a piece of paper so she would know. It sounds as if he went from a tent full of guys to one that only has 3 in it. Wonder how he pulled that off?

Camping in the Desert
Post marked October 21, 1943. Sounds like a bunch of guys crowded into a tent in the desert. Getting ready for a hike up one of the mountains and some other desert training.

This letter was written the evening of October 17, 1943, but Post Marked October 18. Dad is writing this letter while he is on guard duty. (Wonder if this was against the rules?) He mentions that they are getting ready for a 3 week stint in the desert, where they will be firing various types of guns and crawling on their bellies while live rounds are fired over their heads.

This letter is Post Marked October 12, 1943. Sounds like a group went on a little adventure trip and Dad got to swim in the ocean. For a Hoosier Boy, that must have been quite a big deal. He also mentions that he is busy marking his clothes. I guess loosing pieces of clothing with so many guys in the Camp is understandable.

Sorry to Hear that Jake got his Greeting
This letter was post marked today, October 5, so it has been just about a month since Dad's last letter to Geraldine. (He also wrote letters to him Mom and Dad, but I don't have copies of those.) According to his last letter he has been out in the desert doing some sort of training. But, he also had a good time over the weekend it seems and he finally took some time to write a letter home.
